An Autumnal Spruce Up

After (hopefully, weather dependent!) lots of use throughout the Spring and Summer months, a pleasant project for an Autumnal/Winter’s afternoon on a crisp sunny day is a little maintenance of your garden furniture. So whether we are talking about our ranges, or your own furniture from another supplier, the following could apply.

Good old fashioned soap and water lightly scrubbed and then a sanding if necessary is probably the best method. For oak, oiling is optional, we don’t do this very much but have used  Owatrol very successfully, they do both the oil and a cleaner called Netrol and we have restored some furniture by that method with excellent results.

Another alternative to the above is a good old fashioned soapy clean with a power washer. See the video below, which although undertaken in the Spring, is just as effective now.  However, we would stress that you should not be too aggressive with the power washer, go gently for an excellent result, this is especially true if cleaning Serenity in Western Red Cedar.  If you have a Harmony in Painted Accoya or Pine, unless you are going to repaint it, we would recommend a gentle scrub with a brush by hand would be best so as not to disturb the paint.

Also, please remember that your Sitting Spiritually oak, cedar & chestnut furniture will mellow to a beautiful silver and this is a natural part of the timber’s ageing process, as can be seen in the Kyokusen  in the Sitting Spiritually Garden, shown below, now nine years old, cleaned every year and the colour get better and better.

Should you have any questions about your Autumn clean, do give us a call, Martin is always on hand and happy  to answer your questions.
