Every commission begins the way all our furniture does: prime European oak or Accoya, marine-grade fixings, and a maker in Devon or Dorset working from first principles. The difference is that the starting point is yours.

Perhaps it is one of our own designs, gently reshaped – a wider seat, a deeper curve, a back carved with something that matters to you. Perhaps it is a different timber, a painted finish in any colour you can name, cushions in a fabric chosen to sit against your planting. Or perhaps it is something we have never built before. Whatever the idea, you will see it before we cut a single board – we work up drawings, 3D visuals and mockups so you can walk around the piece in your mind's eye first.

Sitting Spiritually makes bespoke garden furniture to commission from our workshops in Devon and Dorset. Our makers build one-off swing seats, roofed day beds, benches, tables and chairs, and bespoke pergolas in prime European oak and Accoya, with any painted colour, outdoor fabrics of your choosing, and carved inscriptions available.

Commissions range from gentle adaptations of our existing designs – a wider seat, a taller back, a different timber – to entirely new pieces designed from scratch. Every commission begins with a conversation; we then prepare drawings and 3D visuals so you can see the piece before it is made, and agree a clear price and timeline before you decide. We deliver nationwide and install by hand. Our bespoke work includes the Floating Bench, designed with Simon Thomas Pirie and awarded a Design Guild Mark.

There is a particular joy in a piece of furniture that exists nowhere else in the world. A commission is shaped around one garden, one view, one way of sitting – yours. And because it is built from the same prime oak and Accoya as everything we make, it will still be there, silvered and settled, for the people you share the garden with decades from now.

Meet the Makers

Bespoke work is not a separate department. The same seven people who build our swing seats and benches take on every commission, and between them there is very little that cannot be shaped, carved, sewn or hung. They love this work – it is where the workshop gets to stretch.

Tell us what you are imagining, however rough. A photograph of the space and a few words is plenty – many of our best pieces started with less.

What happens next?

We talk it through together, then work up drawings and 3D visuals so you can see the piece in your garden before anything is made. We will refine the timber, finish, fabrics and details with you until it feels exactly right, and give you a clear price and timeline before you decide.

Who makes it?

The same seven makers who build everything we sell, in our workshops across Devon and Dorset. Your piece is made by hand, by someone whose name you will know.

How does it arrive?

We deliver nationwide and can install it for you – hanging a swing seat, raising a pergola, settling a day bed into its spot – so the first time you sit in it, it is simply finished.
