RHS Single Oak Rope Swing

Every seat is made by hand, so sizes can vary slightly. The figures below are the largest to plan for.

• Seat: 75cm wide, 25cm deep, 5cm thick
• 60cm between the ropes
• Rope length: your choice, at no extra cost

Sized for older children and adults.

• Threaded, not wrapped. The ropes pass through the seat rather than round it, so the rope does not wear or split the timber at the edges.
• Oak battens underneath stiffen the seat where the ropes enter and stop it twisting.
• Marine hempex rope. It looks and feels like natural hemp but does not rot, mould or weaken in rain.
• No knots. Our hanging system adjusts the seat height without tying a knot.
• Hand-carved, not laser-engraved. Inscriptions are cut by hand into kiln-dried FSC oak.
• RHS endorsed. We are the only rope swing maker endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Also in the range: the single oak rope swing, two seater, round and children's rope swings. See all rope swings.

A name, a date or a line that means something, hand-carved into the oak seat. A flat £100 covers your first 20 characters, whether carved on one side or both; additional characters are £10 each. We confirm the wording, font and layout with you and send a proof before any carving is cut. See carvings

Hanging a rope swing takes about an hour and a stepladder. Our guides cover the three common situations:

• How to measure for and hang a rope swing – branch height, seat height and rope length
• Hanging from a beam or ceiling – using our stainless steel pivot set
• Hanging from a sloping bough – moving the fulcrum so the seat hangs level

Choose a living, horizontal branch on a sound hardwood – oak, beech, sycamore and Norway maple are good; avoid pine, poplar, spruce, willow and silver birch. Hang the swing at least a metre out from the trunk, over grass or bark rather than paving. We cannot see your tree, so if you have any doubt about the branch, ask a tree surgeon to look at it first. No suitable tree? See our oak frame and rope swing.

Rope swings are posted to you with free UK delivery. Uncarved swings are ready within five days; with a carved inscription, allow up to 14 days. Each comes with our knot-free hanging system and step-by-step hanging guidance. Rope lengths are free: choose the length for your branch or beam when you order. Every rope swing carries an unconditional 12-month guarantee, and if one ever fails through a fault of ours we repair or replace it.

We are proud to be the only rope swing makers endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society. It is a quiet but meaningful distinction - one that reflects not only the quality of our craftsmanship, but the suitability of our rope swings within the considered setting of an RHS garden. Each swing is handcrafted in Britain from kiln-dried oak with traditional hempex rope, designed to feel timeless beneath the bough of a mature tree. The endorsement recognises both durability and design integrity - a simple pleasure, made properly, and made to last.
