Due to the handcrafted nature of our products the final footprint can vary slightly from seat to seat, measurements provided are for the largest expected dimensions. If you are intending to set a slab under each leg we suggest not doing so until you have taken delivery.

Nothing is set in stone at this stage. Once your order is placed, our team will be in touch personally to confirm every detail - from placement and access to finishing touches. We then confirm the full specification before your commission moves into the workshop. As your seat nears completion, we will send you a photograph from the workshop so you can see it being prepared ahead of delivery. This is a considered, unhurried process - crafted with care from first enquiry to final installation.

Delivery and optional assembly are confirmed separately, ensuring timings work for you. Accessories such as cushions, covers or additional touches can be selected later should you wish; many clients prefer to live with their seat first before choosing soft furnishings.

Ahead of delivery, you will be contacted directly to confirm a convenient date and time slot. This conversation also allows us to discuss access in detail - from driveways and garden paths to positioning - so everything runs smoothly on the day.

On arrival, your seat is carefully carried into your garden and installed in the exact position you have chosen. The team will assemble and set it up on site, ensuring it sits level and swings freely. Before they leave, you are warmly invited to take a seat and gently sway - making sure it feels exactly as it should. Only when you are completely happy do we consider the installation complete.

Yakisugi takes its name from the Japanese art of scorching wood, and that contrast between natural oak and scorched oak is at the heart of the design. Parts of the frame and seat are carefully scorched to bring depth, texture and richness to the timber - a finish with a character that stain or paint cannot truly replicate. The result is a surface that feels tactile, layered and visually striking, while still allowing the beauty of the oak to remain central.

The seat is crafted in sustainably sourced oak and finished with a low-solvent oil and wax for protection against the British weather. Stainless steel fixings and high-tensile hanging wire complete the piece, reinforcing the clean contemporary look while ensuring lasting outdoor performance. Over time, the natural oak tones and scorched detailing develop their own quiet patina, giving the seat even greater character within the garden.

First launched in 2016, the Yakisugi Swing Seat was created as a special collaboration between Sitting Spiritually and Simon Thomas Pirie - a meeting of shared craftsmanship with a fresh design perspective. Sitting Spiritually had long wanted a more contemporary swing seat within the collection, and Simon’s work offered exactly that: furniture with sculptural clarity, strong material expression and a distinctly modern sensibility.

What makes the collaboration endure is the balance it achieves. The Yakisugi remains unmistakably a Sitting Spiritually piece in its comfort, quality and garden setting, yet it also carries Simon Thomas Pirie’s signature design language - from the two-tone scorched oak to the cleaner lines, lower stance and cable-hung detailing. Together with the Floating Bench, it formed the Simon Thomas Pirie Contemporary Range, exclusive to Sitting Spiritually, and remains one of the most distinctive expressions of the brand’s quieter, more considered modern side.
