Less than 15 minutes from the Sitting Spiritually Garden, East Devon’s Secret Garden is a beautiful and secluded 13-acre garden with many unusual trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Created from farm land and an old roman clay pit over the past 60 years, Burrow Farm Gardens are the product of one ladies determination to create a garden.

Mary Benger moved to Burrow Farm in 1959 and set about building her dream garden bit by bit.  Fast forward 60 years and a thatched stone summerhouse looks towards a lake and ancient oak woodland under planted with rhododendrons, azaleas and other woodland plants. Azaleas flourish in the garden and Azalea Glade is a particularly tranquil and enchanted area of the garden.

The more formal Millennium garden features colour themed planting with a rill running through the centre into a formal pond teeming with goldfish.  The Rose Garden has something of a Mediterranean feel to it with antique terracotta oil jars set up as if they are floating on top of cubes of box.  The planting is not restricted to just Roses but instead features a mixture of summer flowing perennials creating a riot of colour all summer.

The Grasses Garden (created in 2010 to celebrate 50 year since the garden started) features ornamental grasses waving gently above the sunken path. A perfusion of perennials makes a stunning display with pink, blue and purple as the theme. This area of the garden is particularly stunning later in the year.

Take a walk through the wild flower meadow, home to hundreds of orchids as well as many other interesting wildflowers, to the view point and enjoy the extensive views of rolling Devon hills.

The garden is carefully designed to provide interest all of the year with early spring interest through to superb autumn colour.  Once you have walked around the garden you can enjoy a light lunch or Devon cream tea in the picturesque tea room.  There is also an extensive nursery featuring many of the plants that you will see in the garden and a gift shop selling garden related gifts, unusual home accessories and much more.

There is a Sitting Spiritually Swing Seat placed just near to the tea room for a spot of quiet contemplation amongst the peaceful surroundings.
