The First Kyokusen.....

WE SAT TOGETHER IN THE MORNING LIGHT AND LOOKED OUT AT THE FUTURE TOGETHER

In the very early day of Sitting Spiritually Martin was interested in his garden being developed along Feng Shui principles, something that he still adheres to in the garden today.

He had always loved the shape of the Torii Gate….a torii gate marks the approach and entrance to a Shinto shrine. It is the division between the physical and spiritual worlds.

SCULPTURAL

Martin really wanted something that would be as close to a piece of sculpture as garden furniture could be, and that is exactly what the Kyokusen has become, in the Sitting Spiritually Garden, you see it as you walk along the curved  lawn, with its elegant but robust curves.  When showing visitors around the garden, Martin always leads them towards the Kyokusen first, and it catches people’s eyes immediately, it is also an excellent example of how oak ages, but more on that below.

We always suggest to customers to place their Kyokusen where they will be able to see it in the garden from the house if they can, so even on a cold Wintery day, you will see it standing proudly there, and if the sun is shining maybe sit a while!

CURVES IN THE AIR

Kyokusen is Japanese for “Curves in the air”. The Kyokusen Garden Swing Seat is cut from naturally curved Oak, so each one is unique, it is not steam bent or forced. This seat follows the natural curves of the individual piece of timber, so no two Kyokusens are the same.

SPECIALIST MAKERS

The Kyokusen is known as our signature piece, and as such is only currently made by two of our makers, James Amato and Scott McCarthy, so if you order a Kyokusen for yourself, it really will be one of a kind.

AGEING GRACEFULLY

The photos you see in this blog (with the exception of the two seater Kyokusen)  are the very same Kyokusen, that was made in 2005,  it still sits majestically in the Sitting Spiritually Garden.  It has been lovingly tended and looked after, receiving our refurbishment system every couple of years, resulting in it looking as stunning today as it first did 16 years ago and testament indeed to the longevity of Oak, especially if you give it the TLC we recommend.

MEANINGFUL WORDS

Many people are very taken by the quotation carved on the back of the seat to commemorate Martin & Celia’s life together:

WE SAT TOGETHER IN THE MORNING LIGHT AND LOOKED OUT AT THE FUTURE TOGETHER

These beautiful, and very appropriate words, were written by Brian Andreas,  an American writer, artist, publisher and speaker widely known for his simple and poetic short stories.

AN EXCEPTIONAL SEAT

The Kyokusen really is an exceptional garden swing seat – comfortable to sit on, restful to recline on, sculptural & beautiful to look at, and with the durability of oak it will last a lifetime, to be passed on through families to create their own memories.

Martin and Celia’s Kyokusen may be viewed (and sat on!) in the Sitting Spiritually Garden, just please call us first to make an appointment to visit.
