Origins of the Kyokusen Swing Seat
Kyokusen (曲線) translates as “curve” or “curved line” - a simple idea with a powerful effect. In Japanese garden design, curved forms soften a landscape, inviting contemplation and discovery rather than directing you in straight lines. The feeling is quieter: asymmetry, simplicity, harmony; a pleasing arrangement of form that helps the mind settle.
The Kyokusen draws inspiration from the elegant sweep of a torii - the traditional Japanese gate that marks the threshold into sacred ground. Here, that threshold becomes your own: a private sanctuary in the garden, gently held by timber and light, with space to pause and be present.
The sweeping lines of every Kyokusen frame are shaped by the individual curvature of the oak it’s made from, so each commission carries its own character. Pictured is one of our Kyokusen swing seats with a fan back design, engraved with the Japanese characters for Kyokusen — 曲線.

Because every Kyokusen is handcrafted, final dimensions can vary slightly from seat to seat. The measurements shown below are the largest expected footprint. If you’re planning to place slabs beneath the legs, we recommend waiting until your swing seat has arrived so you can set everything out perfectly.

"A Worthy Investment"
We first saw a Sitting Spiritually seat at RHS Wisley and admired it's design and sturdy construction. We love our new Kyokusen Oak Swing Seat, it's a work of art, hand crafted from beautiful materials. It's now aging in it's first winter, ready to be a lovely silver weathered oak seat in there spring. It wasn't cheap, but it's going to last at least 25 years, so that's not much per year. It's an investment we know we won't regret.
