Our swinging garden day beds are made in Britain from prime European oak, designed to bring calm to outdoor life. A generous place to recline, gently suspended, and crafted with the same quiet attention to detail that defines every Sitting Spiritually piece.

Guidance around a Swinging Day Bed
Expert guidance and garden design advice for our beautiful range of handcrafted swinging day beds.
Commonly Asked Questions Around Day Beds
Can the Swinging Day Bed be left outside all year?
Yes. The day bed itself can live outdoors year-round. For the mattress: in the UK we typically use Nautolex Maritime Vinyl, which is a weather-resistant material designed to be left out all year. If you add cushions, those should be brought in unless you’re using the waterproof cover option.
Can the mattress and cushions be left out?
The mattress can usually stay out (UK: Nautolex Maritime Vinyl, designed to be left outside). Cushions should be brought in, or protected using the Waterproof Pull Over Cover.
What is the Waterproof Pull Over Cover, and does it really help with damp?
It’s made from Top Notch® 9, a breathable, water-repellent polyester fabric, finished with a durable boat vent. The vent is designed to help air circulate and let moisture escape, reducing the chance of trapped damp and mildew under the cover.
What is the day bed mattress made from?
In the UK, the mattress is typically Nautolex Maritime Vinyl. In hotter, drier climates, Sitting Spiritually tends to use a Sunbrella® outer with reticulated foam, which allows water to pass through.
Can you assemble the Swinging Day Bed and pergola for me?
Yes. The day bed can be delivered fully assembled, and if you order it with a pergola, Sitting Spiritually can assemble the pergola during delivery. Their team typically takes roughly one working day to assemble the pergola and leave you with a finished set-up (day bed, pergola, cushions and all).
Can I assemble the Swinging Day Bed and pergola myself?
Yes, though this is an uncommon option - most prefer to use our expert makers to install. The day bed itself comes fully assembled, but it weighs roughly 200kg, so it’s not a one-person job. If you add a pergola, it’s assembled in the workshop first, then deconstructed and numbered to help re-assembly, with instructions and a video available..
How long do Swinging Day Beds take to make and deliver?
They typically take 4–6 weeks from commission to make and deliver, and this can be longer during busy periods. They’re made to order and you shouldn’t expect stock to be held. If you have a tighter schedule, it’s worth asking - Sitting Spiritually will try to accommodate where possible.
How much space do I need for a Swinging Day Bed (especially with a pergola)?
Swinging Day Beds are designed to swing within the footprint of the pergolas, but pergolas vary by size. The best approach is to use the published dimensions/size guide for the exact model you’re considering.
How do I secure or keep the day bed in place (soft ground vs paved areas)?
On soft ground, the recommendation is to excavate four holes and concrete the pergola logs in for maximum security. On an existing paved area, steel shoes with bolts are available to help secure the pergola. Once in place, the day bed can be kept still using the supplied restraining ropes to prevent unwanted movement.
What maintenance does a Day Bed require?
Common-sense care: clean, feed and treat the wood, and avoid letting it get dirty or allowing algae to build up. For the first three years, the natural tannins help preserve the oak; after that, aftercare products are recommended to treat and feed the wood. Cleaning is typically done with sugar soap or recommended cleaning products.
